40.31 ASUS EeePC 1000H (Monju)
Monju is a netbook computer for portable presentations, email, browsing, writing, coding, and some data mining. It came with MS/Windows XP Home pre-installed. The netbook features an Intel Atom 1.6GHz CPU with 1GB of DDR2 memory and an 80GB hard drive. It includes an inbuilt SD card reader, 3 USB2 sockets, Wireless, Bluetooth, and a two finger TouchPad.
Ubuntu-Eee (8.04.01) was installed from USB (8 November 2008). The iso image was downloaded from Ubuntu-eee. It is now a dual boot system, keeping MS/Windows, though so far MS/Windows has not been used.
The system was purchased 8 November 2008 for $579 from Bing Lee. It was price marked $699, advertised as a November special at $599, and sold at Office Works for $649. An excellent netbook and fully featured when running Ubuntu-eee. Can easily handle running the Rattle data mining toolkit.
Working: Skype (audio), ethernet, hibernate, suspend, wifi, User USB mount (after commenting out the CDROM entries in /etc/fstab), SD (1GB) card.

Download ubuntu-9.04-netbook-remix-i386.img from http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download-netbook. Write to a USB thumb drive using ImageWriter (usb-imagewriter). Start eeePC holding Escape to get into BIOS and then select to boot from USB.
40.31.2.2 8 Nov 2008
Download ubuntu-eee-8.04.1.iso from http://www.ubuntu-eee.com/. This was then copied to a USB thumb drive using the unetbootin-eeeubuntu-linux-238 application from http://sourceforge.net/projects/unetbootin/.
Plug the USB into the EeePC and whilst rebooting hold the Escape key down to get into the BIOS then TAB to select to boot from the USB. This will boot into the Ubuntu-Eee installer. The options chosen: Language: English; Location: Sydney; Keyboard: USA, Partition: Guided resize sda into 20GB for MS/Windows and 20GB for Ubuntu.
The resizing ended up with: ``Resize operation failure. An error occurred while the changes to the storage devices. The resize operation has been aborted.’’ A bit of exploration indicates that the MS/Windows NTFS journal is not in a proper state. So restart in MS/Windows and exit from it cleanly, to make sure all is okay. It might have got into that state because I had upgraded the BIOS (is that relevant) and on booting I wasn’t seeing the BIOS message about tapping F2 or ESC. I might have interrupted a startup one time try to get into the BIOS! Tapping F2 when turning it on seems to get into the BIOS, but it was hit and miss between F2/TAB/ESC! Got there eventually and this time was able to resize the partition.
Back to the installation. The resizing worked! User: gjw; Hostname: monju; Migrate MS/Windows: None; Install took about 10 minutes; Restart Now and screen went black and stayed that way!!! Had to power cycle with the power button for 10 seconds. Restart and Grub kicked in and booted Ubuntu! Note that this install defaults to the nice (though not all agree) and very easy to use Netbook Remix user interface.
The guided partition, with the resizing, ended up with:

Using the partition manager I formatted /dev/sda2 as ext3 and mount that as /home (with an entry in /etc/fstab) and mount /dev/sda1 as /c, the MS/Windows C drive.
Installed wajig, then did an upgrade.

Install rattle.

The BIOS was updated to version 2102 on 090928. The new BIOS was
downloaded as 1000H-ASUS-2102.zip from
http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us&model=Eee%20PC%201000H/XP.
It was unzipped and copied to a FAT16 formatted USB thumb drive as
1000H.ROM:
Reboot the eeePC and Alt-F2 to update the BIOS.
